Going on holiday with your baby this summer? There's more to remember than just packing your passports and loads of nappies! Read our advice on keeping your baby safe and healthy on holiday:

Long journeys
If babies are healthy it's fine to take them on a plane. Breastfeed your baby or use a dummy during take-off and landing to make it more comfortable for them. Make sure your baby has enough to drink and feed them as usual. Keep babies away from smoking areas in the airport or bus terminal.

Use your baby's car seat belted on to a plane seat or ask to use an air cot. Check with your airline whether you can use a car seat.

Whether in the car or coach, use a car seat that is properly fitted and is right for your baby's size and weight.

Snow and sun
Even if it's very cold outside in winter or in the mountains, still remember to take off your baby's outside clothing and hat when you enter a warm place like a café, hotel or bus.
Keep your baby out of the sun and remember that a baby can burn even in the shade. Use parasols, hats and high factor sun cream. When your baby is playing keep clothes on to protect against the sun. Use sunshades in the car.

Sleeping
It's a good idea to use a travel cot for your baby on holiday. If using someone else's cot then check the mattress is thoroughly clean, fits the cot well and shows no signs of deterioration. If you are not happy with this, then your baby might be safest sleeping on the floor.

If you take your baby to a hotel crèche or someone else looks after them, make sure they know that your baby must sleep on their back.

Remember that your baby needs an adult to keep an eye on them even if they're just having a short nap.

Eating and drinking
If you're in a country where the water isn't safe then you must use bottled water. If you breastfeed your baby, wash your breasts in bottled water, and wash your hands with bottled water before preparing your baby's food.

You'll need to sterilise your baby's spoon and bowls carefully. It might be useful to take sterilising equipment with you. Only give your baby food that has been thoroughly sterilised or that can be peeled, or feed them bought food from sealed jars.

Water safety
When you're near water like swimming pools, paddling pools or ponds, or the sea, rivers or canals, watch your baby all the time as babies can drown in just a centimetre of water.

Health
Check with your GP about travel immunisation and baby's health before you travel abroad. Check that you have adequate travel insurance and a valid European Health Insurance Card (which has replaced the old E111 certificate) if you are travelling in the European Union.

If you are travelling off the beaten track then you might like to pack re-hydration sachets. It is best to avoid taking your baby to areas where there is a possibility of malaria but if you do this, first speak to your doctor about how to protect against it.

Diarrhoea
If you baby gets diarrhoea continue breastfeeding and give other clear liquids if necessary. If bottle-feeding, use re-hydration sachets little and often in place of the usual feeds.

If you are at all worried about your baby then get advice.

  • I so badly want to take my daughter abroad but to be honest I really don't think its worth it, all the money we'll spend and she'll never remember, I want her to be a part of it and remember her times away. My uncle lives in Alabama in America so we're going to save up to go down there & have what they call a holiday of a lifetime :) I live in North Wales and my partner's family all live down South Wales, we've travelled down there 3 times, the first 2 times we went on the train there Ashleigh slept all the way there and all the way back which was like 3 hours each way and the 3rd time she was awake and played all the way there and back with a few naps! She loves it, but she isn't walking yet soooooo things may change when we next go down lol xxx

  • can you go abroad when pregnant ?? xx

    by Ezzaa 25 March 2010

  • i didnt know mineral water wasnt safe! thankyou :D x

    by cadieangel 22 March 2010

  • @cadieangel - I use water from the tap to boil in the kettle for Roxannes bottles. But..after using britta filtered water/Or bottled. Her poo's seemed alot more healthy! Just one of those personal opinion things. :-)

    by Grace-xo 22 March 2010

  • @cadieangel I'm not sure of the real answer for that but I would use bottled water personally just to be safe. Make sure you don't use mineral water though as that isn't safe for babies!!!!

    by LittleMumma 22 March 2010

  • maybee a stupid question, but is boiled tap water not safe to prepare bottles with abroad? I thought if it was boiled it would be sterile?

  • Ive just travelled to Belgium with my little one. She found it quite restless the journey down to dover. But the belgium she slept most of the way. The best thing i have found to do is too take thing eg-blankets, teddys etc that is a reconisable smell, so it conforts her and its eased her alot more than what i thought it would. x

  • Just a quick update to let you all know what happened on the plane with a baby!! You don't get on/ off first but the staff are really helpfull. The baby change toilets are tiny which is quite scary! You take the pushchair (as long as it is an unbrella fold) right up to the plane doors with you, they put a tag on it and then when you get off the plane is it put up and by the doors waiting for you!. As for take off/landing I found offering my son my breast or his juice helped him, gave my daughter a sweet! Liquids wise I would keep it to a bare minimum as they will take it off of you if it is too much but dont worry because once you get pass passport control and are in the secure shopping area you can buy more in boots! You will usually be made to open jars of food and taste them. I found it was easier to take a box of food that you mix with water (heinz baby food etc) and I had snacks such as rusks with me as well. The cabin crew will give you water etc to make up feeds. Hope this helps

  • we dont travel abroad yet.. we do do a 3 nd a half hour jouney to our casravan and Amber-Lei gets on really well with the car

    by Nikki-Amber 19 January 2010

  • @laurie_alici I went on holiday when I was 14 weeks pregnant. Apart from still having morning sickness I was fine. Just let your insurance company know your pregnant. Be careful what you eat and drink and don't spend too much time in the sun!

    by 23 December 2009

  • Anyone been on holiday whilst pregnant?

    by Laurie_Alici 9 December 2009

  • I have spoken to the airline that we are flying with at xmas and they seem to be really baby friendly. Families with babies get on and off the plane first by the sounds of it, and I have been given lots of advice on how to cope with take off and landing. Been told to make my little girl suck or chew on a sweet and get the baby to either suck a dummy, bottle or breastfeed. Will let you all know how it goes when we get back!!

    by mumof2 13 November 2009

  • Holidays with babies are usually more of a change of scene than a rest :) Glad you found the info helpful!

    by bubbalicious 12 November 2009

  • i would love to take my kids abroad but i dont like flying myself, and im worried my daughter will run amock on the plane! and also if they find it too hot, im just scared of taking the chance!

    by teresacharl 20 October 2009

  • I haven't been abroad yet with my son.....

    by Bunny89 19 October 2009

  • I was petrified of how I would cope travelling alone with my daughter a few weeks ago (2.5y/o) but to my suprise she was an angel, was so amazed by the huge planes and by everything that was so new she didnt cry once. The take off and landing was the worst bit but i made out it was a really cool ride and was sounding mental going "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" to make her smile instead of cry... but it was good, and i would do it again! dont worry girls!

    by poshpig 15 October 2009

  • i took my lil man 2 one of the channal islands and he was fine on the plane but its only about 40 mins.. im worried that at christmas when i take him to see my family in cyprus he wont take it as well as he did b4.. but still he will be a well traveled baby lol

    by Yolanda 14 October 2009

  • i wouldnt take a baby to abroad or anythin liek that....it would be hard work.

    by siennasmummy 14 October 2009

  • im too scared to take baby on plane!

    by Aylas_mum 14 October 2009

  • very useful :)

    by Jenni450 14 October 2009

  • This info is incredibly handy!! We are off to Florida on 27th December and cannot wait. Big surprise for Millie and Cody should enjoy it too even if he won't understand it! he will be 8 1/2 months old by then and I have been worrying about the flight, food etc. My main worry is what we can and can't take on the plane, the are so many restrictions its ridiculous.

    by mumof2 14 October 2009

  • My mum was talking about holidays but i would prefer to go somewhere just for the weekend instead of flying out to somewhere.. way to hectic! xx

    by Jess08 13 October 2009

  • planning on taking little one away soon....not sure! THink it would be too hectic!

    by fantastica 12 October 2009

  • Were thinking about going somewere in this country in april/may next year just for weekend and then we may be going abroad with my parents and my boyfriend in july

    by ConnorsMummy 10 October 2009

  • Wev only ever taken the kids to Devon and it was the best holiday ever! We had to take spares and then extra spares of everything but they loved it. We haven't ventured abroad yet mainly because my kids don't even particularly like the British heat. We went to a place called Woolacombe Bay in Devon and it was so brilliant for kids and for adults, were going back in June for the third time :)

    by Evey86 9 October 2009

  • Glad I saw this, I'm going to be taking my daughter on a plane in a couple months

    by Novbaby08 6 October 2009

  • Thats useful, because i'm so scared if we go away next year what to do and what i'd need to to do be safer in a foreign country x

    by Sarah-Grace 5 October 2009

  • That's really really useful to have. Were going away to Greece next year. and very excited. She will turn one while we are gone! I am very excited. Hunter has some family over there. I was also invited to go visit Corey in Germany, I guess he is going to be based there when he gets back from Iraq, but Hunter doesn't want to go and since Corey is my ex (we were always just better off friends lol we were crazy to date) I don't think Hunter would want me going alone lol. I can NOT wait to go to Greece though. Trying to learn greek now... The simplest words are like three times as long though lol.

  • I want to take my baby on holiday next year with my mum and dad to Rhodes in June. He will be 6 months then and Rhodes is very hot. So i'm not sure. I don't want to put him at risk but this year when i went in July there was a 4 month year old baby and his parents said it was great. But im not sure xx

    by Christineeex 3 October 2009

  • I've taken Callum on a few holidays, not abroad but we have been to center parcs, cornwall and the peak district! It was so much fun. I reccomend Sands resort for anyone going to Cornwall its in newquay and amazing for babies, they have all the baby eqipment you need and when you come down for dinner, theres a high chair waiting a free baby food!! :)

    by Antonia 3 October 2009

  • Lillys_Mummy, I'm glad you had a good time. I think it is good if you can pull it off as it gives children experience and makes them learn to adapt but I'm either too lazy or too much of a worrier to do it!

    by 3 October 2009

  • i went on holiday with my sister, and her daughter Tilly-mae was 6 months at the time, and it was really sucessful :) xx

    by Lillys_Mummy 3 October 2009

  • I would never be able to go on holiday with a baby - it would be a nightmare! It's hard enough keeping them safe and happy at the shops, never mind in a strange, hot place where they don't have their favourite food etc.! But each to their own!

    by 25 September 2009

  • Thanks that's really useful xx
