Car Seats

Blog Image

Being safe when travelling with a baby in the car is really important.  Here's a quick and easy list of the things you should do to make sure your baby is as safe as possible!

  • Always use a properly fitted baby car seat that is the right size for your baby.
  • Never put your baby in the front of a car with passenger air bags.
  • Don't use a second hand car seat as you can't be sure if it was not damaged in an accident with the previous owner.
  • Don't let your baby sleep in his car seat in your home, and never leave your baby alone in a car.
  • When you're in the car, make sure your baby isn't in direct sunlight and doesn't get too hot.
  • Lastly, Don't smoke in the car.  In a small space the smoke is much more likely to affect the baby.

  • my daughter is 6 months old now and sooo nosey, she wants to c wot is going on all the time, she is in a rearward facing car seat at the min and hates it but she is too small for a forward facing car seat as she is a lil dot xx

  • lotie always snoozes in her car seat and i hate having to take her out and wake her up :(

    by LoveMyLottie 25 May 2010

  • I swear by maxi Cosi as fitting by seatbelt takes a minute and in older non isofix cars they are very universal from what I've experianced. Having spoken to the Dorrel group that manufacture maxi Cosi I have been told if a car seat is more than 6 years old it looses it's structural integraty so get a new one. I hope they make an auto carrycot soon as I love there stuff!

  • i can understand why some people would want a cheap second hand car seat but i think for the safety of the baby/child it is obvious that a new one is best and splashing out on one thing is not the end of the world

    by katherine 15 May 2010

  • Sarahk I'd get it and have a thorough look at it and you make the desicion after al its ur bab and you know him/her best

    by babymama10 2 May 2010

  • I would never buy a used car seat as you don't know where they have been and who they've been used by! If its someone you know and trust then its a wee bit different. My daughter hates getting into her car seat but loves being in the car looking out the window :)

  • I love my foward facing car seat, it's fab. Now Darcey has the front seat in my mum's car more than i do, with the air bag turned of ofcourse. She's got to the age where she wants to see absolutly everything, well i think she got to that age a long time ago, but she's so much happier in the front :) xx

    by Chirs_10 21 March 2010

  • @Stephii_Babe I would recommend Maxi Cosi car seats from birth. They're not only really safe but they come in a nice selecton of designs, a sun hood that can be pulled back and stored in a slot in the actual car seat. There's also a little storage compartment for the rain cover. (which you have to purchase seperately but you probably won't need it. I only got one because I used my quinny frame with the car seat for a few months!) And they are quite light...well until your baby gets big anyway!!! x

    by LittleMumma 17 March 2010

    by yummymummy09 30 January 2010

  • I wouldnt chance, as you dont exactly know whats happened to it, if you can find out some information about it, as it might no be safe, and that could be why its up for grabs.

    by alisha-x 29 January 2010

  • you shouldnt buy your car seat from freecyle as it has been used before. anything could have happened in it!

  • I had a second hand car seat but I got it from someone I trusted and checked it over for signs of damage etc... no probs at all!

    by ryansmummyuk 14 October 2009

  • I would always buy a brand new car seat for my kids however I will be keeping Cody's incase we have anymore children but only if they are not in an accident (touch wood we won't be). You can buy carseats at reasonable prices now, you just have to do a bit of research online for style, colour, price etc

    by mumof2 14 October 2009

  • MY partner's mu has a car seat (not sure why, cos I have one!) but it's second hand, so wont let him go in it! They were a bit annoyed, but safety MUST come first!

    by fantastica 13 October 2009

  • I would only use a second hand one if I knew for sure it had not been in an accident, eg if I was given it by a family member. But would still prefer new!

    by Akira 12 October 2009

  • Id always buy a carseat brand new as you never really know if it has been in an accident or not

    by ConnorsMummy 10 October 2009

  • I Think your should always buy a car seat from new because you never know if it bin in an accident.

    by Emily_Kate 7 October 2009

  • i get really worried when it comes to car seats especially if im offered one for free but is second hand i just dont know if it is worth the risk so therefor if i buy a new one i dont have to feel worried about it lol! xx

    by Jess08 6 October 2009

  • It also depends on what year the car seat came out

    by Novbaby08 6 October 2009

  • i have a second hand car seat but i know my cousin used it once, and we had it properly fitted, but if she'd used it alot and i know something had happend in it i'd of brought a new one straight way without even hessiatating

    by Sarah-Grace 5 October 2009

  • I wouldn't do it sarahk... You don't know if it REALLY has been in an accident.

    by Kellysays2u 4 October 2009

  • Not worth the risk, like people have said it could have been in an accident or something. Is anyone getting their carseat installed by a proffesional either from the shop theyre purchasing it from or a car shop placey ? x

    by Christineeex 3 October 2009

  • Yeah, i wouldnt sarahk, its not worth the risk. Things like that are best bought brand new so you know its safe! x

    by Antonia 3 October 2009

  • @Lillys_Mummy You can do without the car seat base. I think it's safer with it and I always used one. It came with the travel system.

    by 3 October 2009

  • sarahk id say not to bother, its not really worth the risk. aso could someone please tell me the use of the car seat base, my sister said he never used it and there 100 pounds? can u do without them?

    by Lillys_Mummy 3 October 2009

  • I'd always buy safety equipment for baby brand new. You'd never forgive yourself if something happened.

    by 3 September 2009

  • It might be ok, if it's clean and not v old. But yea sprice is right, maybe not worth rising. Also ppl taking the user poll are wrong! you shouldn't sleep a baby in a car seat instead of their cot, it's safer not to sleep them sitting cause they can't breathe as easy

    by shshsh 17 August 2009

  • safe as houses

    by 29 July 2009

  • The problem is you can't be sure that it is still safe. After all suppose it had been involved in an accident and something under the cover, where you can't see, got damaged. I wouldn't risk it.

    by sprice 28 July 2009

  • I saw a car seat up for grabs on freecycle - do you think this is safe or dodgy?
