Housing

You might find that you want to change where you are living when you have had the baby.

There are several options depending on what area of the country you live in and how old you are.  Speak with your local Council to see what they can offer and what advice they can give.  Your midwife or health visitor might also be able to help.

  • I lived with my mum & sisters until my little boy was 1, then moved into a teenage parent project thing where they give u flat but u have to do a group a week, but its so helpful and u gain qualifications there r support workers there, its not like a hostel u dont have any restrictions or rules or they dont tell u what to do , just young mums live in the building they give u the flat for 2 years then after they help u find a bigger perminent property and its all payed for u just pay water & electric its gr8 cause we have a dinner group where we do cookin n eat together and r kids all play 2 gether, Its in Brighton.

  • Me and my daughter have recently moved out, it really has helped our relationship grow, as i can do things my way i want for her, without people commenting on it. It has been one of the best decisions i've made. I got my place through a thing called the rent deposit scheme and i would recomend anyone who is looking into housing to ask there local council if they do this scheme before approaching housing associations :]

  • not to sound bad but the council houses in my area arent very nice. the areas are awful.. and whether i look to move out with my boyfriend or by myelf, i need somewhere safe as im terrified. sleeping at home by myself scares me, let alone living alone with a baby. its terrifying. i heard the concil will pay for rent in a choose of my place? but im only 16 :/ would they still do the same? xxx

  • I filled in my Council House application this week. Just waiting for their system to be updated & i can start bidding!! I'm on GOLD so it shouldn't take to long hopefully xx

  • I do agree with @mjones here - she's so right!

  • I miss living at home - having your own house is so much stress! Cleaning, bills, washing, more bills, getting furniture and even more bills! Money's really tight. We manage but I get so stressed over it all! I'm really grateful we have housing benefit paid for but it took us a while for it to finally come through after we moved in. Same with all our benefits! We were living off £100 for 2 weeks for about 2/3 months and it was horrible!

  • im going to carry onliving with my parents till i know im readii to be on my own or with the father with the baby i i wouldnt be able to afford it soo i got a bed to sleep in that the main thing i could give my baby alot more living with my parents than i can living on my own

    by XkirstyX 15 April 2010

  • I think when it comes to moving out..im going to private rent and my boyfriends going to try claim housing benifit for our rent. Its alot easier than all the hassle of going through the council! Thats what ive been told anyway! Grace, xox

  • we (we being me, my son, my fiance and our friend) live in a 2 bed flat but our neighbour is a nightmare. He was so quiet for the first 3months but soon started moving furniture at 10pm and banging. he constantly leaves the building door open so I worry that my pram will get nicked! Also, we have our friend staying and I want rid of him but I can't put him on the streets! I wanna move to a new area too. It's a pain.

    by mummymonster 10 April 2010

  • live with my mum && sisters atm, cant wait to move out though.. need to get job first though as dont wanna move into place with no furniture:/ x

    by laurenella 5 April 2010

  • im still livin with my parents....which is very stressfull at times but ehh you gotta love em lol but cant wait to get my own place soon.... :)

  • *whoops was ment to rite 2 bedroomed flat!

    by kerry 31 March 2010

  • Me an my partener live in a 3 bedroomed house, we are on the rent deposit scheme, so the council work out our total income, which is jays wages, child benefit and the tax credits, they then gave us a figure which we had to pay towards the rent an then they pay the rest. We are also on the council house register but we are not going to start bidding for a house until we have more children as we already have a 3 bedroomed house an if we were to get a council place now all we would get is a bedroomed flat! x

    by kerry 31 March 2010

  • i was living with my mum and when i feel pregnant i went to the council and told them my mum didnt want me to live with her anymore they put me on the homeless at home scheme whih means u can stay at home for 6 months in that time you can bid on flats or houses in ur area and try to wina place you want, if you dont by 6 months they wil just house u wearever...i would advise to do this as i bidding the first week i was on the scheme and won the 3 places i had bidded on i veiwed them all and got to choose the flat i liked the most now i have been living in my 2 bed flat since aug 09 and its lovely i wouldnt move back home now i love having my own independance and my own little family homw for my son, as im on income support my renrt and council tax are payed for me so all i have to pay is water rates which is only 5.40 a week so its quite easy to manage on my own so i can afford some luxurays like sky tv n broadband and a full fridge :) x

    by YummyMummyJD 26 March 2010

  • i rent a 2 bed flat and council pay my rent...went and saw a housing advisor and they sorted it all for me :D

    by cadieangel 22 March 2010

    by Naomi555 10 March 2010

  • Arww thankyouuu @intuition :) x x

    by alisha-x 25 February 2010

  • Fingers crossed for you @alisha-x :D xxx

    by intuition 24 February 2010

  • Im still waiting to move, ive been bidding viewing that.. but nothing yet :( hopefully sooner rather then later though, as my house is considered over crowded fingers crossed.

    by alisha-x 24 February 2010

  • If you are lucky enough to already have a council house, but need somewhere bigger and don't want to wait around for the council to move you - try www.homeswapper.co.uk - fantastic website!! AND if your council have signed up for it, you get it for free! I'm with Sovreign Vale and get mine for free (Oxfordshire).

    by intuition 24 February 2010

  • It's annoying for as i'm a Care Leaver so i can't bid until i'm 18 & have to stay in a hostel until then xx

    by Babycakes_x 17 February 2010

  • i live eith my fiancee and his parents.

    by babymuma1 18 January 2010

  • Me and my boyfriend live across town from each other so i really want him to movein with me but there is no space so it'd be hard for him to see the baby when its born x

    by MissKirsty 15 January 2010

  • My house is way overcrowded, i cant wait for peace and quiet where i can just spend time with my son without all the chaos of my mum, dad and sister x

    by xkaybx 6 January 2010

  • My house is classed as overcrowded and will be even more when the baby is here. I was allocated 20 points which is right near the bottom. Will this change when the baby is here?

    by 23 December 2009

  • i live at my mum and dads during the week but get fed up of people interfering. so on a weekend me and lilly stay at my partners flat to get away its only a 1 bedroom so small for all of us i have been on the council list since she was born and still waiting i just want my own space with no1 interfering so i can bring up lilly my way

    by XelleX 19 December 2009

  • Get your doctor or midwife to write to the council, as they can put pressure on the council, in finding or getting closer to getting a house/in future etc....x

    by clusby171 18 December 2009

  • I live at home and baby due May 2010 plan to stay at home for little while and then I want to move so me and my partner dont have to rely on anyone else and be independent - people intefering already and they baby is not even here!

    by 3 December 2009

  • can you midwife really help you getting housing? especially fi you live with parents and its already crowded?

    by Pinklilly 2 December 2009

  • im in temp accomodation since my 8month old was born we r still waitin 2 hear bout a council house! we wer in private accomoadation but landlord evicted us while i was in hospital d day i had jamie! we got damp in the house and because we expected him 2 sort this problem out he started gettin nasty even changed locks while we wer out and wasnt goin 2 give us our furniture until we threatened with the police! So all i want most in this world is a home 2 call my own! I would love 2 be able 2 buy our very own home but we r jus not in the rite place financially!

    by 0xkaty86xo 23 October 2009

  • I got a temporary council place within a month and got offered a permanent housing association place a year later, which was in the perfect area for me! I guess i'm pretty lucky seeing how long some others have to wait.

    by LittleMumma 16 October 2009

  • people presume that when a teenager gets pregnant they get keys to a house straight away but as alot of you are confirming you can wait for a long time to be offered a house! i lived at home with my mum until ellie was 1 and we went private renting and our landlady decided last year to sell up...lukily she gave us first refusal but we didnt we got a mortgage and have now got our very own home!!

    by gillhugh 15 October 2009

  • ive been on the council list for AGES waitin for a place for me and my daughter and my partner i cant wait to get my own place so at the moment im at home wif my mum and brother

    by siennasmummy 14 October 2009

  • I'm lucky to be where I am (with fiance's parents) its like a self contained flat in our area but we still cant wait to own our own home

    by Akira 14 October 2009

  • i would love to move out but am quite scared of being on my own all the time although my partner would be there most times its not the sam as being at ur parents so im in to minds help!!!

    by oneandonly 14 October 2009

  • My son is 3 1/2 years old, we have been in a 1 bedroom tempory council flat for 2 1/2 years and they council wont give me anywhere else, dont want me to go private rent (not that I can, Ive tried) and keep threatening to evict me because its a temporary property. To those that say teenagers only have babies to get a house - WHAT ******** HOUSE??????

    by ryansmummyuk 14 October 2009

  • housing confuses me

    by Aylas_mum 14 October 2009

  • i could never get a council house im still on the list now and i applied 4years ago dont depend on council, get privately rented much better

    by kirstyyy 14 October 2009

  • when i fell pregnant with my eldest i was placed into a b'n'b for 4 months it was an hour away from the town/family and no transport ! all they served was breakfast and we had to go and get our own lunch dinner! so everyday i would have to walk an hour to my nans and an hour back just so that i could eat! this made me really ill luckily i was placed into a one bedroom flat where i stayed for 4 years and shared that with my two daughters until 2006 when i went private and am now renting a two bedroom house, i went through some hard times but came out better in the end :)

    by Angel_Faye 14 October 2009

  • i lived in a hostel with my partner for 8 months, was horrible, eventually we have got our house, and are sooo happy!

    by clusby171 14 October 2009

  • i have to apply for places every tuesday but they say i wont get anywhere until baby is here. i wouldnt mind private renting its just so expensive! x

    by Jess08 6 October 2009

  • my council told me to download the forms or collect them from the office for when she's born nd get on the list as soon as possibl ebecause it could take a while, and it's beneficial to be on the list

    by Sarah-Grace 5 October 2009

  • ahhh i cant wait til me and mark and lilly get our own lil place
