Cut smoking during pregancy

Cut smoking in pregnancy - dads too!

Smoking in pregnancy is dangerous. Scientific evidence shows that around 30% of cot deaths could be avoided if mothers didn't smoke when they were pregnant. Taken together with the risks of smoking around a baby at home, this means that smoking could be linked to 60% of cot deaths.

If you smoke 1-9 cigarettes a day during pregnancy you are more than 4 times as likely to have a baby die as a cot death than a woman who didn't smoke at all during pregnancy.

Even if you did smoke when they were pregnant, you should still try not to expose your baby to smoke after birth as this can help reduce the risk of cot death. It's definitely still worth making your home smoke-free.

  • I think in all honesty it is better to quit for your babys health and for your own but if you are a heavy smoker it cannot be easy. I quit when i was pregnant but then after i had my son i started smoking again

  • I'll be perfectly honest and say I didn't quit when I was pregnant. BUT before you condemn me to the depths of hell my daughter is now 2 and is perfectly healthy. I was told the dangers of having a small baby, cot death etc.. but when Heidi was born she was a perfect weight at 7lb 7oz and she's never ill! I agree that it is 100% better for your baby if you didn't smoke, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't quit when pregnant.. but good on the ones who did and good luck to the ones who are trying to quit! :)

  • I quit smoking befor i new i was pregnant, i didnt find out i was pregnant untill i was 14 weeks and had quit smoking only about 3 weeks befor finding out after i had felt ill i didnt fancy another fag again, i guess my body rejected itself. Sometimes i get the odd craving for one now and then but then i think of what damage it could do to my little and i personally feel it is not worth the risk x

  • i think smokeinn is bad but its up to the mum weather they do give up or not even if they just cut dwn on fags thats better then nothink but i wudnt smoke in pregnency or after just becuase of the risks it could do to the child but it is up to the mum weather she wants to take the risk of smokeinn during pregnecy :/ x

  • as soon as i found out i was pregnant i gave up & told my mum not to smoke around me .. dont want to harm my baby but at end of the day each woman is different and if youcontinue to smoke than thats their choice

    by LiilMumma 5 June 2010

  • of course it is entirely up to the person who is pregnant if they smoke or not there is advice everywhere when you are pregnant saying that you should not smoke and gives reasons why and what you and your baby/babies will gain by cutting out the habbit personly i think it is better for the pregnant woman to quit smoking and being in the company of a smoker is bad IF it is all the time but if it is just a one once then don't loose any sleep over it what i personly think is a must if you want to live in a smoke free environment is have anyone who does smoke outside while they are smoking the chemicals will be alot less likely to harm the baby by you breathing them in if the people who have to go outside to smoke disagree then they need to be taught a lesson and as a pregnant member of the household who would be better to voice that fact?

    by katherine 29 May 2010

  • No i dont think people should even go near you when smoking if you are pregnant, with me it just made me feel sick, i hated it and dont like the idea of smoking anymore anyway xx

  • No, smoking during pregnancy to me is wrong, its weird, i didnt like any smoke around me at all because i obviously didnt want any passive smoking around me and the smell was really horrible to me but if I smelt tobacco i quite liked the smell and with this pregnancy its the same, its strange <3

  • i stoped smoking during pregnancy and have only smoked a few times sice lottie was born, as i was VERY stressed

    by LoveMyLottie 25 May 2010

  • I quit smoking as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Luckily I also fel sick at the smell of smoke so that made it so easy :) Unfortunatly I've recently started craving fags again (babys 14months old now). I think it's because I'm back at work and I used to take fag breaks when I got tired but now I just have to soldier on.

  • I was on 30 a day before i was pregnant, when i found out i cut from 30 to 5 to 2 i quit all together at 18 weeks because i split up with my violent partner. Ive had a few since having Emma but i dont think id ever smoke as heavily or as often as i used to. Social smoking when im out or whatever (when i finally go out!)

    by BeckiAndEmma 20 April 2010

  • As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I gave up straight away. I don't like the thought of even a drag of a cig or even a sip of an alcoholic drink incase anything happens to my baby! At the end of the day, it'd all be down to me and I don't think I could ever forgive myself if anything did!

  • i'm definately glad i had the strength to give up in my first pregnancy cause it's just made me feel so much better about myself!!

    by rosiealford 12 April 2010

  • I'm now 31 weeks pregnant. The NHS smoking in pregnancy councillor got in touch and did a home visit. She did a carbon monoxdie test on me (where you breathe into a machine thing). I had a shockingly high level of 20 and it also told me that my baby had a carbon monoxide level of 6. It made me feel physically sick. She talked through a lot of things and we agreed that initially I would try and go "cold turkey" with no NRT. I said it wouldn't hurt to try and we set a quit date of Friday 2nd April. Such a high level of carbon monoxide confused me as I thought I was still smoking around 10 a day. I was very wrong. I kept track on my smoking between that day and my quit day and I was in fact actually smoking an average of 22 cigerettes a day!! My quit day arrived and I caved in several times. 8 to be exact! But still a drastic change from 22! The following day, Saturday, I pinched 2-3 drags off of about 3 of my partners cigerettes. So about 6-9 drags in total for the entire day. Ended up with a migraine by late afternoon and had a nap on the sofa. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and today have been completely cold turkey with no drags or anything AT ALL! I did it girls! I've quit. Been about a week now really and I feel so damn good! After that migraine I've had no headaches, no nausea, just good feelings and cleaner lungs. I feel fitter already. It's the best thing I've ever done and I'm actually CALMER than before. I don't get as stressed out. The councillor explained to me, that you are in fact MORE stressed on cigerettes because of the cravings you experience and the nicotene receptors in the brain wanting more. THAT's whar causes the stress. After day 2 or 3 you don't feel stressed like you did before. It's fantasic. x No NRT, no help with patches. Just pure will power. Thanks for the little bits of encouragement and advice. Much appreciated. xxx

  • I Smoked While i Was Pregnant But Gave Up As I Was Told It Was Un Safe For My Baby

    by proud-mummie 7 April 2010

  • there are some pretty strong opinions on here, and tbh i do agree. I used to smoke 20-30 a day, and that was for a number of years, since becoming pregnant i have tried everything! to quit, but have been told by my doctor that due to stress/panic attacks i could lose the baby if i quit completely. I have worked extremely hard not to smoke but whenever i feel like im going to have a panic attack i do have one as it calms me down. On a really bad day ill have up to 4-5. i know its bad, but i have gone without before and ended up in hospital and came very close to losing the baby. I have made an agreement with my housemates that all social areas of the house are NOT to be smoked in, including hallways, kitchen living room etc, and if i do start panicking, i will force myself out into the fresh air before even considering lighting up. i would love to be able to quit smoking completely, and am hoping that once baby is born i will be able to, but while the babys life is at more risk when stress/panic, i do the best i can.

    by hockeygirl72 5 April 2010

  • i give up in pregnancy but honestly dont think i would have been able to if it hadnt made me sick. can see how hard it is for some people, so dont think they should be judged, they understand what they are doing but it is hard for them.x

    by laurenella 3 April 2010

  • i have only just recently found out that i may be pregnant and have been cutting down on my smoking for a while! im thinking about totally quitting but dont want to go cold turky! does anybody know if patches you get could harm the baby? xx

    by broghanxx 5 March 2010

  • the day i found out i was pregnant i got through 20 fags as i was so socked and scared of being a single mum and then as from the day after that i gave up went cold turkey and didnt have another one until my son was 6 weeks old, i do feel that when your pregnant smoking isnt just harming you its harming your baby to

    by alfies-mummy 2 March 2010

  • I've managed to cut down to 5-8 a day - but I decided I had to quit for good when my four year old told me she wanted to go outside for fag breaks when she was a grownup. That was it. I've sent off for help from the pregnancy quitting help NHS thing, just waiting to here back from them. Just seeing her innocent four year old face, telling me she wanted to smoke like mummy does. It make me feel sick. That's it now. With help from the NHS I'm sure I can do it! x

  • Im Soo Happy I dont Smoke as im very aware people find it very hard to quit... But mothers Shoud DEFO Do It For their Children, i know i would give my life for my son so smoking means nothing.. Its A Shame alfies Dad Doesnt Feel The Same, He Did Try However And Failed! Does my Head In It Stinks... Thankfully He Never Smokes in my house or ever around my son!

    by YumMumSophii 17 February 2010

  • i do not smoke, never have, never will. im pregnant at the moment and my boyfriend has given up smoking because he does not want to harm our baby as we both know the risks.. and he will stay smoke free after baby is born too.

    by FrancescaC 23 January 2010

  • i am so lucky i didnt and have never taken up the habbit but whilst i was pregnant my babyys dad quit and every1 around us spoked in the garden!

    by Nikki-Amber 19 January 2010

  • i believe that anyone who smokes while pregnant is just being selfish, and is only thinking of there own needs and not there unborn babys.

    by babymuma1 18 January 2010

  • I have never smoked but personally i dont think parents should smoke at all, even if its not around the child. I dont even like people smoking in the doorways to shoppin centres etc as my son has to go through the smoke :/ x

    by xkaybx 6 January 2010

  • My boyfriend is driving me mad with his smoking - he sits in the other part of the room (open plan dining/living room) with the window open and I can still smell it! He just won't go outside!

    by Laurie_Alici 9 December 2009

  • I've managed to cut down from about 25 a day, to 8 a day. It's so hard and I really can't see being able to cut down anymore. It fills me with guilt but being a mum of three is so stressful at times and patches just don't cut it. Even cutting down helps the baby so I'm proud that I've cut down over half! I never smoke around my children and feel I'm doing the best I can. It's a subject of very mixed opinions and heated discussions. Quite frankly, all you can do is your best and that's all anyone can ask of you. xxx

    by intuition 4 December 2009

  • i cannot quit i find it very hard even trying to

    by K_Giggles 20 November 2009

  • People shouldnt judge about smoking during pregnancy. yes i did give up towards the end of my pregnancy but it was hard. Yes you should do your best to quit, but as a friend of mine was advised by her doctor some people get too stressed out and this is more harmful towards the baby. As stated i do believe you should give up but i certainly do not judge as i know how hard it can get and its just another reason for people to moan and bitch at you it doesnt make it ny easier

    by amandabirket 25 October 2009

  • Ive quit.. gone from about 20aday to 4 or 5 to none. im really proud of my self for staying clear.. just wish the fella would now

    by Stephii_Babe 22 October 2009

  • I dont smoke but dont think i could while i was pregnant, you wouldnt let your new born smoke would you. I think that the amount you care for your baby should be enuf to give you that push to stop. Iaslong as people try even if they carnt stop completely Im trying to get my partner to stop but he doesnt want to. i dont know what to say to him??? :(

    by Heva1990 16 October 2009

  • I smoked when i was pregnant not heavily only about 5 a day but my son was born with breathing difficulties due to the smoke and seeing him in special care was the worst thing ive ever seen . smoking is not worth it. Im totally smoke free now have been since he was 2 days old and would never smoke again I hate people smoking around tyler. they dont understand what hes already been through due to me smoking

    by Jennie2009 16 October 2009

  • I have never smoked and never will. I know several people who were heavy smokers and managed to quit cold turkey as soon as they found out they were pregnant and are still smoke free. One or two have started up again but I also know a few people who still smoke when they are pregnant. it is upto them what they do but it makes me feel so sad seeing them doing it. I even heard one girl say she still smokes whilst pregnant because she has heard it means she will have a smaller baby so the labour will be easier. Didn't feel like bursting her bubble and telling her that I know 2 people who had small babies (not due to smoking) and their labours were long and very painfull They ended up having epidurals and one had a c-section.

    by mumof2 16 October 2009

  • Ive cut down loads, im totally stopping really soon. Gone from 15 a day to 5 or 6 and with in the next few days 2 or 3 :) x

  • i used to smoke about 20 fags a day before i found out i was pregnant when i found out i was expecting i cut down but cudnt totally giv up i was smoking about 5 a day sometimes only a couple

    by carlaxx 15 October 2009

  • Its definatly really important to atleast try your best to quit in pregnancy. Even if a mum to be manages to cut right down its far better than not making any effort at all. I didnt smoke but then I didnt smoke before hand either

    by OopsyDaisy 15 October 2009

  • i never did smoke and never have but i think to those who do should give up as soon as they find out there pregnant

    by siennasmummy 14 October 2009

  • I gave up as soon as I found out and since having my daughter I have slipped back once or twice, but only a few cigeretts... I don't think I'll ever go back again though. The amount of money it wastes for one, I could buy my daughter so much stuff. And the health effects i could feel straight away.

  • As soon as i found out i was pregnant i gave up straight away and then i breastfed, when i finished breastfeeding i went out for the first time to drink and ended up having a cigarette, hooked again i gave up and went back to it many times, and then i fell pregnant with my 2nd child and gave up straight away once again, after 3 years of not smoking i started again (i blame alcohol) lol. am trying to quit now and am down to 1 a day! i thnk it gets harder as you get older!!

    by Keridawson 14 October 2009

  • As soon as i found out i was pregnant i stopped smoking and now the thought of it makes me sick. I dont let anyone smoke near him either.

    by KatyCam 14 October 2009

  • I've been smoking about 15 a day for 4 Years... but i don't know if any other smokers feel the same, but now that i'm pregnant, it just makes me heave. So even though, the nicotine is kicking in and my brain is telling me to have one, it just make me feel sick. plus i thought, everything that i am putting into my body will effect my baby. So it is hard, but you have to think this could really hurt my child. (Even though my friend's mum smoked through both of her pregnancies and they were fine, its still obvious its not a good idea)

    by Georgia91 14 October 2009

  • @Sarah-Grace Can't believe she did that, Wasn't she worried for her baby!? I don't know anyone who smoked through pregnancy!

  • Yeah - being pregnant is great for quitting No pangs, no withdrwala. It's like your body is saying no!!!!

    by 4 September 2009

  • I was a smoker, then met my fiance and he "made" me quit - then 3 months later I fell pregnant so I'm glad I quit. But even if I hadn't, the minute I knew I was pregnant, I would NEVER have TOUCHED a cigarette. I just wouldn't be able to. I can't stand seeing pregnant women smoking but I try not to judge others.

  • I don't smoke in the house not at all. But I'll have a smoke when I'm not around my little babe and can't see that this is a prob

    by 13 August 2009

  • Smoke - free is the way to go. Make your house smoke free and if your mates want to smoke make them go outside even if it is raining. Then tell them that they stink!

    by sarahk 27 July 2009

  • I don't think you should smoke at all during pregancy! Try and give it up completely as it's sooo bad for the baby - and a good excuse to give up. If you can do it for 9 months, you can probably cut it out 4eva! :)
