Back to sleep

Blog Image

Babies who sleep on their backs are safer and healthier. It is not safe for babies to sleep on their fronts or sides. Babies settle more easily on their backs if they have been placed to sleep that way from the very first day.

If your baby is less than six months old and you find him asleep on his tummy, gently turn him onto his back. Don't feel you need to keep getting up all night to check on this. After this age, babies can usually roll onto their backs themselves so leave him to find his own position. Whatever your baby's age
always place them to sleep on the back.

  • When my baby was first born I put him in his cot on his back untill one night he was sick and was suffocating on his vomit. His dad had to put his mouth over the baby mouth and nose and suck the vomit out to clear his air way. He was turning blue. From then on he would not sleep in his cot. Only his buggy. I would spend ages rocking him in the buggy to get him to sleep. Now he sleeps on his belly in his cot. He has been sick again and he can lift his head out of it and he can also go round in circles on his front so I know if he is sick again he can at least lift his face out of it.

    by amandabirket 25 October 2009

  • I know this probably sounds daft but is this just in moses basket/cot etc or is this if your cuddling too. Alyssa loves to snuggle upto mum/dad/nan/gramps n auntie on her tummy and she'll fall asleep in minutes lol. Never really gave it much thought when she was cuddling us but now that I'm becoming increasingly nervous about cot death this question has me wondering? xxx

  • ayla will only sleep on her back

    by Aylas_mum 14 October 2009

  • My first would be start off on her back and always end u on her side, my second will not sleep without being on her front! Even if i put her already asleep on her back, the next time i look at her she'll be on her front. I heard it was ok for them to be on their front as long as they can roll over by themselves- at least thats what my health visitor told me! Both my girls were sleeping through the night at 2 weeks old :)

    by LittleMumma 14 October 2009

    by Angel_Faye 14 October 2009

  • Mine sleeps on his back fine! Hates lying on his front! Maybe that'll change....but all good for now!

    by fantastica 12 October 2009

  • Tasha41 - At six months you don't need to keep getting up all night to check that your baby is still on their back or wake her up. After this age, babies can usually roll over on to their backs themselves so leave her to find her own position. But whatever your baby's age always put them down on their back.

    by bubbalicious 8 October 2009

  • Jess08 - Your baby should settle fine on the back. Babies settle more easily on their backs if they have been placed to sleep that way from the very first day.

  • My daughter goes down on her back but always flips to her front and ends up at the other end of her crib- if I flip her I know I will wake her. Is it still important to flip them back after 6 months (she is about 7 months now)

    by tasha41 8 October 2009

  • i hope my baby gets into a routine of sleeping on his/her back it really is quite worrying i didnt realise how serious it was. x

    by Jess08 6 October 2009

  • Athena will only sleep on her back lol. She HATES her tummy still. She wants to be able to move and she can't so she hates it. She wakes up to play at 4 every morning though. I hate it... Then doesn't go back to sleep till 8 to 10... By then it's to late for me to go back to sleep.... It stinks but I do it for her.

    by Kellysays2u 4 October 2009

  • I know i love sleep i just hope my son does too..and doesnt keep me awake all hours of the night haha! xx

    by Lillys_Mummy 3 October 2009

  • Suki I know what you mean - my 2 fell asleep on the boob all the time and I'd just let them do it coz it was easier - once they were weaned then they screamed the place down when I put them to bed and they still do (omg!!) but they will learn eventually (I hope they do anyway!),

  • arrgh 5am! nightmare i can't functino until at least 6.30. I'm all ruight there though. Problem i have is getting them to sleep at night. Hours of crying, guilt, settling and re-settling, going to sleep on hte boob and thene needing boob again to get bak to sleep. Too tored to properly sort it out though. Anything to get them to sleep.

  • Minty you are so lucky, it's not fair!!! I cannot function without a good night's sleep! Thank god mine sleep through now - took them long enough, they're nearly 4 & 2 now, the little rascals! Saying that, they still get up at 5am!!!

    by 3 September 2009
