What makes a good birthing partner??

I'm going to be one of my best mate's birthday partner when she gives birth in a few weeks. Just wondered what everyone thought made a good birthing partner? :)

  • Arwww thats dead nice! after having my lil man, I now would love the experience of being someones birthing partner! once my bestie gets knocked up (well when she does) she's already told me I can be there, she's more like family. Its deffo gonna be an amazing experience for you chick. I think it depends on the person, as every1s diff in labour, so they'll have diff prefrences :). Good luck to your pal though.x

  • @Shshsh - Being someone's birthing partner is an amazing experience. Enjoy!!!

I think the best thing you can is know her wishes beforehand and be her voice while she is in labour. Support her, fetch her stuff, encourage her. Prepare to have your hand broken and know that labour is pretty gruesome when your watching from the bottom end... but if you dont cry when she gives birth I'd be amazed! xxxx

  • @shshsh i think its somebody who knows you really well! like i had my mum, babys dad n his mum in with me and cos i was really close before i felt comfortable during and after. I was supposed to be my mates birthing partner though and when shes upset she doesnt like people hugging her or touching her etc. so thought that wud have been useful to know when she was in labour. (she had emerg cesearean in end so didnt go with her) so i think if you know the person well when time comes to it, you will already know how to help her, just the same as helping her anyother time in her life i suppose! no matter how much you both cry though u will both be fine! you will be amazed by the end of it lol xxx

  • wow what an amazing thing to do and experience!! Like some of the others have said I would talk to her before hand so that you know what type of birth she wants etc. She is going to forget everything that he wants when she is in pain and will probably be very tired so it would be very handy for you to know what she wants so that you can help her achieve it! Most importantly stay strong, if something goes wrong try not to let her see you panic because that could make her worse. Stay cool and calm!
