Here is an explanation on how a tens machine works

I've had 2 children and never made a birth plan...tbh i don't think they would have been any use as I changed my mind so often about what i wanted during labour and situations can change too. Lots of people include what pillow they want in their birthplan and also music, whether they want their partner at the top end or down below
You can include what pain relief you want, gas and air for you- who you want to cut the cord, if you want baby put straight on you or cleaned first- who is first to hold baby. Silly little things. Your HV will know alot of other things that are commonly included in birth plans xxx

Birth plans are generally. in my opinion, useless. Planning your birth is pointless, because it will happen how it happens. Your body will take over so dont worry about positions and stuff - your body will automatically put you into the position it finds best. And as for pain relief - how can you know what pain relief you'll need for a pain you've never experienced before???
The bits you cant control however are worth putting, the little details, like @LittleMumma said - music,, who you do (or dont) want present, whether you want to breastfed etc. I think all mine said is NO NEEDLES unless absoloutely neccesary (im a severe needle phobic and that statement was pointless anyway.. when I was pregnant I had a meeting with a senior anethaetist and there was a huge sticker on my notes saying if I was brought into hospital they were to be notified because of my phobia), that I wanted immediate skin-to-skin contact, that my partner was to cut the cord and that I wanted to breastfeed.
If you want to put all your preference re. positions, pain relief etc then go ahead hun, but please dont be dissapointed if your labour forgets to read the memo! lol. What will happen will happen, and the most important thing is that baby comes out safely xxxxxx

I agree with the above comments.I dont think I made a birthplan with my daughter who is now 7 and I no I definitely didn't with my son who is 14 months old. My midwife talked to me about it with my daughter and I remember saying to her that it will happen how it happens and that I wanted to go with the flow. The only thing I did say is that I would be breastfeeding. When she asked me again with my son I just told her I've done it before and wanted to go with the flow again. I wanted to use water as much as possible though. I was constantly in the bath during labour with my daughter and luckily they had a birthing pool free when I had my son so I gave birth to him in there! I found that the midwifes didnt actually look at my notes both times to see what type of birth I wanted so we just went with the flow. I think it also helped me not get upset if I couldnt have the birth I wanted. I have a few friends who were dead set in what they wanted and in the end their labours were nothing like they wanted and they were slightly disappointed. I think its hard to decide what you want when you havent been through it before as well. You have no idea what position you will be more comfortable in or how much pain you will be in so cant really decided what pain relief to have. It happens that way it happens. Like @ryansmummyuk said as long as baby arrives safely thats all that really matters. xxxxx
