Moving out? Money!? Help!

I'm 17 and have a 9 month old daughter and am living at home with my parents and my little brother.
I'm planning to start college in September (studying to be a Midwife) then Uni by the time my LO starts school (scary thought!) and my daughter is still sharing a room with me (I understand that it is recommended that babies move into their own rooms by the age of 6 months). I have the Housing Register Application form all filled out and ready to be handed into the council, but I wont be able to afford anything! I'm absolutely shitting myself!
My brother & his partner got themselves a council place last Christmas and its was completely stripped! No carpets or anything! All I have to my name is a bed, a cot, and some draws. My savings is non-existent, and I'm not prepared what so ever! I know I need to move out for my little girl, she needs a proper home, but the thought of us having nothing is frightening! Does anybody help you with refurbishing your flat/house? Any information would be much appreciated, thank you!

  • I'm guessing it is the same for every where but I'm not sure, where I live if you go on the council housing list you are in bands A being the highest and you bid for houses the person in the highest band gets the house! So you can read about the house and it should tell you about what it has and hasn't got! You can also get a grant (that you don't pay back) to help you get started with a new place! The best thing to do is talk to someone in your local job centre! x

  • You will deffinately get a community care grant, i was awarded £700 but i know some people who have pushed a little and got well over £1000! Im not sure about where you live, but in my area there is a big salvation army furniture project, a big warehouse of donated furniture etc that is a lot cheaper than it usually is, i was given a recommendation by my local housing office and i got half price on everything, i ended up getting my bed for about £20 and a lot of other useful things. They also gave me a free starter pack (pots and pans, cutlery, bedding, curtains etc) Some of it was new, and a few things were used. It was really great and helped me get up on my feet. You should ask someone in your housing office/council if there is anything like this in your area x
