Sleeping With Me

My Daughter Is a Month Old And Sleeps With Me Most Nights. I Love It I Love Her Being With Me But My Mum Has a Go At Me And Says Its Too Dangerous. But Some People Say Its Fine. Should I Stop, Is It Really Too Dangerous?

  • Depending on who you ask, you'll get different answers. The NHS line is that its dangerous, but just as with any side to parenting, for every study that says something is dangerous, there is another that says it's fine,or even beneficial. The world health organisation, UNICEF (united nations baby authority) and most of the breastfeeding organisations encourage it.

I'm personally a big fan of cosleeping, as long as it is done safely. This link explains some of the common flaws in cosleeping research, and has a safe cosleeping checklist at the bottom.

This link is also great for advice http://www.kellymom.com/parenting/sleep/familybed.html

My son has spent part of every night since birth in my bed (with all reasonable precautions taken) and all of every night since he was 4months in my bed, and I believe it actually saved his life (he used to suffer from sleep apnoea while in his pushchair or cot, and never once had it while he was in my bed. Also, when he was little he was a very sicky baby, and more than once he was sick in his sleep and started to choke. He didnt make any noise, so I wouldnt have woken up had he been in a cot, but because he was in my arms, I could feel from the way he was moving that something want right. I always took the opinion that if anything was going to happen to him in the night, I would rather he did it next to me where I could help him, rather than in a cot where i might not notice.

Babies die in their parents bed, and babies die in cots. It's one of those things where you have to do all the research you can, and make the best decision *your* family

Just googled these, there are certain cots that you have in bed with you for the first few months but i cant seem to find them.

    I'd follow Eartmummy's advice seeing as she is a co-sleeper herself :)
