A stinking habit

Blog Image

A journalist fesses up to subjecting her unborn child to 500 cigarettes. She's racked with guilt. Smoking in pregnancy puts the baby at risk of cot death, asthma, glue ear, infections and poor health. What's more is that kids are more likely to smoke if their parents do.

Should she have quit? What are your tips for cutting down and quitting?

  • I think that you should quit, personally. I never smoked but I changed everything to give my baby the best shot at life. I know it's hard but it's not impossible.

  • That's horrible poor little baby, I stopped smoking as soon as I found out, had a 20 pack of mayfair superking in my bag and snapped them all and flushed them down the loo, shows the dedication <3

  • people dont know what smoking does to their unborn child. But they need to quit before its too late

  • Thinking how its 9months that your pregnant and she smoke 500 in that time ... that's like 2 a day. Then considering some women smoke without cutting down as they don't think it does harm or don't realise or maybe simply are finding it hard to quit, how many fags must they be breathing in for their babs in total?

  • I think she should have cut down because as a smoker I know how hard it is to quit! I have tried quite a few times to quit but I have now cut down to 5-6 a day which is really good for me!

  • I was a heavy smoker before I found out I was pregnant, I since have only had at the maximum 10 fags which although people may say is bad, it is very hard and I am struggling to quit.

  • Cut down, then work on cutting out, that is what my midwife told me to do.

    by carly_14741 18 June 2011

  • I Have managed to sucessfully cut down from 20 - 25 fags per day to 4 since i found out i was pregnant.. still trying to cut down even further but im not sure that will happen, my midwife has told me aslong as i keep at around 3 to 4 fags per day its safer for the baby than what i was smoking! i have been smoking 5 years its so hard to stop.. i hate people who shout at me for smoking whilst being pregnant and some of them have never smoked in their life! if they knew what this sort of addiction is and how it affects people then they wouldn't have an opinion and they probably wouldnt be able to judge

  • i was a smoker for about 4 years but when i found out i decided to stop. It was hard n i did reach for a fag twice but both times it made me sick and since then havent touched them. Some days i think i crave to smoke but i just bring myself to do that now x

  • I smoked before i got pregnant but as soon as i found out i was NO MORE

    by tscourtney 15 February 2011

  • im 16, 22 weeks pregnant and have smoked for 3 years. i admit that its horrible and disgusting! i used to smoke about 10-15fags a day, but as soon as i found out i was pregnant i cut straight down and i now only have around 4fags a day- which i admit is still bad. i am hoping to quit for good as i know the dangers it can cause to my unborn baby and i honestly want him to be healthy. i am finding it really hard but believe i can do it soon :)

  • I totally understand people find it hard & that it's a difficult thing to do but your unborn child should come first & i think if you can't quit completley then at least cutting down is a help! Also the idea of smoking when you are if you are Breast feeding is disgusting & should be done by nobody. Only because your smoke goes to your lungs which are in your chest & you feed from your chest so you may as well give your newborn a cigarette & light it if you are going to do that which is wrong & therefor shouldn't be done - just my opinion xx

  • I don't smoke so I can't comment on how hard it would be to cut down so quickly on discovering that you're pregnant, but if you're trying for a baby then i believe it should be AFTER you've stopped smoking. I think the NHS would be wasting money on breath tests, money that they could be putting into more midwives, people we are lacking so badly at the moment! If someone doesn't give up smoking for their unborn child then i don't think a breath test will stop them. They should use the money on educating pregnant women on the damages smoking has on unborn babies instead Until smoking is illegal then why should women be forced to take a breath test, yes they are damaging their babies health but that is a decision that they make and no one can force them to stop unfortunately. Also i do know a lot of people that have grown up to smoke like their parents but mine did and it has never tempted me at all. Couldn't get away fast enough from the damn stuff!!!! I hope the fact that i don't smoke will rub off on my children. Overall I do think women should quit but i know that it is an addiction and isn't just as easy as flicking a switch on and off for everyone.
