Healthy Start

Sam Fellows, Health Visitor at Basingstoke PCT, introduces Healthy Start.

If you have a baby on the way or a child under four and you meet the criteria below, you may be eligible for Healthy Start vouchers which you can use to buy fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, fresh milk and infant formula milk, and coupons that you can swap for free vitamin supplements.

You qualify for Healthy Start if you're at least 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old AND you or your family get...

  • Income Support, or
  • Income-based Job Seeker's Allowance, or
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or
  • Child tax credit (but not working tax credit unless your family is receiving working tax credit run-on only*) AND an annual family income of £16,040 or less in 2009/10

You also qualify if you are under 18 and pregnant, even if you don't get any of the above benefits or tax credits. After birth, the baby will continue to qualify provided you meet the criteria listed above.

  • If you're pregnant you will receive one voucher (£3.10) a week
  • For each baby aged under one you will receive two vouchers a week  (£6.20)
  • Children aged between one and four receive one voucher a week (£3.10)

You can use your Healthy Start vouchers in most local shops and major supermarkets.

If you are pregnant or the mother of a baby under one and receiving Healthy Start vouchers, you also qualify for Healthy Start women's vitamins.  Children over 6 months old and under 4 years old receiving vouchers qualify for the children's vitamin drops - and children under 6 months can also get them too if a health professional thinks they need them.

Ask your health visitor or midwife where you can pick up your free vitamins for you and your children

Apply for the Healthy Start scheme and find out more.

  • i think these vouchers should include nappies and whatever aswell i mean it is still used by your baby and lets be honest a baby needs a clean bum rather than a bag full of apples doesnt it? specially from 0-18 months id rather buy nappies! xx

  • they're helpfull, but you dont get alot of money..

    by hannar 14 April 2011

  • I get them but give them to my mum for her to spend on fruit and veg etc as she cooks most of my meals, she knows what to buy. I do think more people should qualify for them though, just because of your income or age, it doesn't mean you eat more healthily than someone who does qualify. They can only be spent on certain things so it would make sure every pregnant person ate healthily. X

  • I forgot about these but at my 8 week app with the midwfie she gave it to me and signed it right away!

    by Lynzlogan 24 August 2010

  • They are really a good idea, but i do think that every child should be entitled to them, as amz said, people are somewhat better off on benifits these days than working, every child deserves the best start in life, it's a right kerfuffle to sign up too! but now that i've got them they really do come in handy!

  • I've lost my voucher :( It was signed by my midwife too. Worth asking for another?

    by Ameliamajors 9 June 2010

  • Gutted, if only they did the vouchers for people aged 18 and below! As I'm 18 so don't qualify for them :( xx

    by KellyJ 7 June 2010

  • i think its a good idea but the messing around to re-get them after the baby is really werid hehe

    by SkyesMummy 26 May 2010

  • They told my sister she had to pay for everything until 6 months down the line she found out she never

    by DarceyMyLove 16 April 2010

  • The system is so odd & to me has never made any sense, but in fairness - what benefit isn't weird and very complicated? We do get them, and i think it is a great idea and there very useful

    by AlecB 15 April 2010

  • I've been eligible for Healthy Start vouchers for 3 1/2 years but haven't claimed them...I'm not really sure why? Might have to start! @Amz_n_Tianna the "system" is so unfair/messed up eh?! x

    by LittleMumma 25 March 2010

  • I cant believe I dont qualify for healthy start vouchers.... i only work 15 hours a week and am on a low income but they have told me i dont qualify.... i have 2 pay for everything!! i would be so much better off on benefits - what has this world come to!! 10 years ago u wer better off working but now its the other way around!!
