35 weeks and waiting for next midwife appointment

We get so many leaflets every week in class its impossible to read threw them in class, and some have pretty basic information, some have safety tips not even I would of thought of, for example, Avoid dressing your baby in hats which tie round, avoid braces on baby clothing and always keep your baby away from dangling cords to avoid strangulation.

It's strange how silly things you never really think of but I suppose its common sense about the blinds but braces, and tie up hats I never really thought about. So now it's made me wonder what other things you should really look out for when dressing babies.

At next antenatal I'm definatly going to ask, because there seems obvious do's and don'ts such as no hats inside, and one extra layer then you feel comfortable in, but I'm sure there is more that'll b e interesting to know.

  • With your baby's clothes the important thing is to feel your baby to see if they are too hot or cold. Hands and feet often feel cold and that is normal so feel the tummy or back of neck. You can then decide whether to add or take off clothes and bedding.

  • I know, so many things you don't think of like no hats when sleeping, when in hospitals they put hats on some babies in the spbu? You only add an extra layer compared to yourself for the first 4 weeks and then they need the same amount of layers as you. Sleeping bags are a good guide to how warm they should be and some baby thermometers give you a guide as to how many togs they need depending on the tmperature of the room which is brill! Don't worry too much, most of it just comes naturally once is born, i think it's more maternal instinct than common sense :D

  • Scratch mitts are great but something I found with my first baby was.... (they're not so common now but you still get some of the cheapy scratch mitts that have elastic running round the inside of them, rather than a stretchy cuff style! if you know what I mean) Avoid the ones with visable elastic... My little one had them on and had been sooking on it in her moses bag and the damp and the elastic just rubbed and left a friction/cut along her wrist. It was nothing major but I got so upset, my first baby only a couple weeks old had a bleeding wound :( As I say though They're not that common now, but if you get given any just leave them off!.. Most sleepsuits etc now have built in scratch mitts which are excellent :)
