35 weeks +3

This week at antenatal, we had to decide or at least have an idea on contraception after our babies, and we had a women from family planning down, to show us, what the implant looked like, what the coil felt and looked like, and safe to say I've got my contraception methods, in place, and appointments, when labours finished I'll be having the pill injection of Depo-Provera which can last up to 13weeks, but after 4weeks I'll be having the Mirena coil, which apart from 6 monthly checks doesn't have to be changed for up to 5 years, which for me will be easier, that way I won't forget my pill, and won't need to go every 13 weeks for the injection.

Contraception, although your pregnant and may think is silly to think about you can't get pregnant you are pregnant, which is true but after your babies born you can get pregnant so easily, and unless breastfeeding, you can go back to your normal contraception methods such as pills and implants after 21 days, but if your likely to have intercourse before the 21days, then you will need an alternate method, such as the injection after labour, or condoms.

It's nicer to enjoy your newborn baby, and spend quality time with your child then, to fall pregnant straight away. So contraception is important to think about before you end your pregnancy.

  • I think it's brilliant that contraceptive options are discussed at antenatal classes, it's something that has been playing on my mind, and it's good to know you're not the only one :)

  • LittleMumma - i'd be tempted to touch my arm all the time, as we felt a lifelike silcon model, i could feel it and messing with it isn't good. I am not going to stay on the injection for ages, as i've heard alot of mixed things about it, and i know i'm useless at the pill, i may be open to having the implant, but luckily i'm going to the clinic to watch my friend have hers in so i think i may decide not to have the coil as i have researched more into it last night, but it will be on my optition list, i am hoping i'll have no complications if i do go on it. i also researched into patches but i'm not sure they'll benefit me at all, and the new ring method of placing a ring inside for three weeks and removing it for a week and placing it back just doesn't appeal to me and being new they've not got all side effects, and down sides for it. and I know, they should warn everyone anti biotics cancels it alot more, some clinics do some don't and the ones who don't tend to get girls pregnant because of it, so alot more people should be aware of it even doctors should be aware girls are on contraception and when handing pescriptions out should tell them there pill will be ineffective x

  • Sarah, what do you mean you will be tempted to mess? When you say about the implant, i think it's great! My mum and nan got pregnant on the coil and i have 2 friends whose coil got attached to their insides and needed operations to get it out (eugh!) I did try the depo-provera but if you have it regularly it is linked to osteoperosis in young girls which is why i chose to end that contraception. The first time i got pregnant i was on the pill and no one explained to me anti-biotics cancel out the pill therefore i have a 3 1/2 year old daughter :D

  • Akira - The side effects have been discussed, but probably not as in much detail as you've gone threw, however i had horrible time on the pill, and i know condoms break, and injection is just temporary after birth encase i'd never have the implant in my arm as i know i'd be tempted to mess which can make it in effective however, if i have side effects to the coil i'll obviously find another method but my mum had the coil, and so did a few other people i know and had no trouble with it, so hopefully, it's a not a common thing to get such bad side effects to it, i mean i had a reaction to hair dye, and i'm constantly seeing it now more then i had before it happend to me, so maybe because your more aware you are seeing more cases, but if i do get any side effects what so ever i will have it removed. thank you for the warning though and i will deffiantly check the other effects it could have that i may not have been told about before hand x

  • The Mireana coil is not as great as they make it out to be, please check out www.curezone.com and search mirena IUD forum. There is alot they never mention an I would hate for anyone else to go through what I went through. The company making the Mirena are being taken to court for not stating possible side effects and misleading consumers

  • xxDanniJxx - if you go to your local family planning, or local gp. there give you your options there so much more now then just pills and coils, you've got patches, the injections, implant and alsorts, i would suggest getting it done soon, being carefulls good though and at least your using something, but if the condom splits and you don't want to get pregnant then having another method to prevent pregnancy is always best x x

  • My daughter is 10 months n i still havent sorted contraception, obviously ive been carful n used condoms but really dont know what 2 go 4 n i dont want the coil or pill :S

  • The thing with the pill and other similar types, is that if you're ill or have other medication etc, it can make it fail.... so yeah with the majority of girls forgetful, the ones that stick to aren't guarenteed it'll work anyway. I think it's really great that you've sorted it all out already and very mature, shows not all 'kid's are as stupid as they make out :P

  • see i'm rubbish with the pill and many girls are, but some people although know about other methods tend not to ask about them, as it's not seen as cool to have something like a coil, but it's even more unpleasent to get pregnant again and again for not asking about other methods, which is why i've decided already and made appointments, i don't regret being pregnant but i think getting pregnant again so fast won't be best for me, my babys dad, and my baby and there the important ones who need my time x

  • Well said :) One of my closest friends is pregnant with her 4th in as many years and regrets not being able to spend time getting to know them all as individuals, with them all being so young they are all so demanding and this pregnancy is tiring her out too much, which can't be too great on the baby!... and the reason there's 4 in 4 years - she forgets to take the pill! xxx
