Bedtime bliss

Where to start this week?

The new sleeping regime is going very well. Before, I used to put Ashleigh and Tegan to bed at the same time. That meant one of them didn't get the attention they needed and whoever seemed to need it most that night would get it for the simplicity of peace and quiet!

I've carried on doing the usual "wind down"  5.30pm Bath time- Tegan out first, dried, nappy on, get dressed, into her bouncy chair whilst I get Ashleigh out and do the same (except the nappy!) Then we do something relaxing like read a book or watch cbeebies bedtime hour. At 6.30pm Tegan has her bottle and Ashleigh a beaker of milk or water. 4 out of the 6 nights I've been planning to try her new sleep pattern she's fallen asleep in my arms so I haven't needed to do anything! She's only woken 3 or 4 times this week compared to the recent 3 or 4 times a night, so I've been enjoying wonderful nights of peaceful sleep!!! The other 2 nights I've given Tegan her milk then laid her in her cot in her room completely pitch black and only switch the lamp on for Ashleigh when she has fallen asleep. It took a few hours of controlled crying and going in and out laying her back down before she fell asleep but I was prepared for this so let Ashleigh sleep in mummys bed which she enjoyed very much! I got a little upset having to let her cry but I knew it was just because she was tired and this will eventually benefit us both. I'm hoping once she starts going to sleep on her own I will have more time to read Ashleigh a bedtime story or sing her a nursery rhyme so she gets the help she needs to get a good nights sleep.

PANIC!!! Tuesday afternoon Ashleigh comes home from school and is slightly grumpy but nothing too unusual- it's hard work playing you know! I decided to give her a bath early as she was covered in paint so popped her in at 2pm. When i got her out she started shaking uncontrollably and crying but I just put it down to the temperature change as it was a bit chilly and tried to dry her as fast as i could and get her dressed. She seemed quite hot so i took her temperature. 42oc OMG!!! I ring NHS direct and they ask me so many questions which at first I felt irrelevant to what I was explaining but better safe than sorry. The lady asks me if she has a runny nose, tummy ache, aches and pains, sore throat etc. I told her I don't think so but I wanted to ring her pre-school just in case. They told me she had been complaining a little bit but was playing alright so they thought she was probably coming down with a cold and had written it down for me but forgot to give me the note! I rang the NHS direct again and carried on with the questions. When the lady said "suspected swine flu", my jaw nearly fell to the floor....how could I not notice this?! Even if it was normal flu, I should have picked up on it. She'd been playing fine since she'd been home.

She's been sleeping alot and lost her appetite completely. It hurts to swallow even water and it was hell getting her to take tamiflu. She was offered a jab against swine flu, but I stand with my decision not to give it to her, as every parent does what they feel is right, I've heard of too many bad side effects. She's recovering well with lots of hugs, kisses and love <3

As for me I've been enjoying myself a bit more this week (apart from the obvious wanting to take my baby girls pain away). I'm getting my implant out on monday and somehow my depression seems a little better just knowing it will all be over soon. I love watching my girls play and grow together, the things Ashleigh can teach her baby sister, the instinct to love each other. Tegan showing that she's worried, even though she can't talk, she shows with emotions and lots of hugs. I'm worried we will all catch it but so far we're not showing any signs.

I will keep you all posted and if there are any specific topics you would like me to talk about in my next blog, just let me know. xxxx

  • @minikirst the sleep is defo a problem for me, i have to take naps during the day while my eldest is at school and youngest is asleep, something that was so much easier when i had only 1 newborn! I find it hard to keep up with housework because of this but lukily kids are worth it and i would go forever without 1 wink of sleep just to see their faces :)

  • @ryansmummyuk I've recently changed doctors because Ashleigh has been waiting for allergy tests for 3 years now and i kept asking and asking and they kept saying "you will be contacted when you're at the top of the list" Now i know it doesn't take 3 years and eventually moved to a different doctor after many more times off getting majorly annoyed at them and have been told she was never on the waiting list, you can imagine the complaint i wrote the old doctors :) Luckily Ashleigh's night time breathing cleared up on its own, but she still has an inhaler as the type of allergy she gets is associated with breathing problems. I never felt my old doctors had time to listen and i always had a different one which wasn't very nice as i had to explain things over and over and over again!

  • I was told they couldnt diagose them till 3!!!! Stupid doctors. I told my doctors over and over again I thought Ryan was asthmatic (I had childhood Asthma too) and they said he didnt... eventually I saw a lovely doctor when he was in the same state he'd been every other time Id took him - she took one look and said she wasnt happy with his breathing and put him on a nebuliser. When that worked she said she couldnt diagnose asthma at that age (he was 1 1/2 yrs) but she'd prescribe an inhaler as she thought it was and it works! So glad I was finally listened too... sometimes feel some doctors are too busy to listen and check properly. I was so glad I went to her!!! xxx

  • She's fine now thank girls, i wrote this over a week ago so she's well over the "swine flu" as i too am not completely satisfied that had she actually been seen by a doctor they would say it was swine flu. Thankfully the rest of us didn't catch it. Unfortunately though Ashleigh came home from school yesterday with a tummy bug- it's funny, she hasn't had a day off school since she started april '08 and now she's been off twice in a matter of weeks?! @YumMumSophii How old is your LO? When i thought Ash has asthma as a baby they told me they couldnt test her until she was 1! They gave her a pump though as she had trouble breathing at night, never did find out why.

  • Hi hun, My little boy was diagnosed with Swine Flu a few weeks back... personally, Im not sure, I think it was just another bad chest infection as he gets them a couple of times every winter. But when I was talking about booking a doctors appt my friend mentioned swine flu and I thought 'Oh god. Even if he doesnt have it the doctors wont see him cause its the same symptoms'. Trouble is, they diagnosed any cold/flu related symptoms as swine flu now. So I went on the Flu Pandemic site and put in his symptoms - low and behold its swine flu!! He got a prescription for Tamiflu but I never used it... they recommend you dont with kids if their syptoms are not severe, as they reckon its only effective if taken within the first 48 hours of syptoms appearing (had been longer than that) and it only shortens syptoms by a day... basically its an accelerant, makes the flu worse but shorter. Like Ashleigh his temp as 42c but I was controlling it with Calpol and tepid baths, and we had his asthma inhaler for his breathing. Lots of TLC and keeping a close eye on it and he was fine! Thank god. Does annoy me though that they just decided its all swine flu.... like I said I think it was a chest infection and he should have had antibiotics, not Tamiflu, but I couldnt get him 2 a doctors! Glad Ashleigh is ok now though xxx
